Born September 11, 1900, Anna Ashley
Lamar Switzer approached each day with enthusiasm, bathed them in
appreciation, and filled them with accomplishment. She loved the Navy
and cherished her Pensacola heritage and worked to preserve its history.
Anna believed so strongly in
education that as a young girl she would leave Pensacola to attend
classes in Georgia and New Jersey. Because of her enthusiasm for
Pensacola and education, she invested her time and talents to ensure
that Pensacola could offer quality programs for those who choose to live
here, raise their families here, and return as retirees.
She was an artist and published
author who believed in honing skills. It was important to Mrs. Switzer
that Pensacola Junior College now exists for anyone wanting to learn and
grow without leaving the community.
Pensacola Junior College is honored to
have the opportunity to strengthen and enhance the college with an
arts-centered facility in her name and is proud to be a part of her
continuing legacy to the community she so loved.
Programs
The Visual Arts Department offers the following degrees: Associate of Arts
in
Studio
Art; Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design, Associate of Applied
Science in Photography and Associate of Applied Science in
Multimedia.. The Associate of Applied Science in Multimedia has two
tracks: Multimedia/Web and Interactive Media, and Digital
Video/Broadcast. A.A. degrees are usually thought of as the
traditional transfer degree to four-year colleges and universities. A.A.S.
degrees are also transferable, but generally only to professional art
schools.
A number of noted art colleges and institutes such as the Atlanta College
of Art, Kansas City Art Institute, Memphis College of Art, Savannah
College of Art and Design, Ringling School of Art and Design, and the Art
Institute of Fort Lauderdale, visit each year to recruit from our majors.
Articulations exist between a number of these, meaning that our graduates
enter those institutions as juniors, often on scholarship. Of special note
is the unique A.A.S. to B.S. articulation between PJC and Florida A&M
University in Photography.
Department chair,
Mark Francis,
is available to advise and register students
