Around 1880 President Garfield, speaking of the president of Williams College, is said to have defined a well endowed college as one with a log that had Mark Hopkins on one end and a student on the other. Times, and instructional methods, have changed, but the concept of Socratic questioning with small groups of students continues to be useful. High fidelity simulators used with debriefing offer a framework to continue this educational tradition. Still, simulators are instructional aids; it is the teaching that matters. The Mary Smart Simulation Center has thirteen high fidelity simulators that are used to help create those important teachable moments. They are listed below.
The Gordon Center for Research In Medical Education, U of Miami
- Harvey, the cardiopulmonary patient simulator
Gaumard Scientific Company, Inc
- Hal (Adult Untethered with wireless communication)
- Noelle with Newborn
- Newborn Hal (Untethered with wireless communication)
Laerdal Medical Corporation
- SimMan (5)
- SimBaby
Medical Education Technologies, Inc
- Human Patient Simulator (with Program for Nursing Curriculum Integration)
- PediaSIM
Ten simulation suites in the Center use the IP addressed ETC
recording systems capable of interfacing with the Laerdal and
Gaumard simulators and equipped with three cameras (one pan tilt
zoom) and a microphone. Three of the systems are wireless.
