Free PJC Wind & Jazz Ensembles Concert
9/24/2009

Pensacola Junior College presents the Wind and Jazz Ensembles Oct. 8 as part of the Lyceum Series.

The free concert is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus.

With Don Snowden conducting, the Wind Ensemble begins the concert with John Philip Sousa’s “Black Horse Troop” followed by Johnnie Vinson’s arrangement of “Nessun Dorma.” The Wind Ensemble’s program concludes with University of Florida composer Paul Basler’s composition “Ngoma za Kenya.” This three-movement work was commissioned by the Florida Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, National Honorary Bandmasters Fraternity. The composition was created from extended sketches he wrote while living in Nairobi, Kenya in 1992-1993 as the Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Music at Kenyatta University.

Under the direction of Roger Villines, the Jazz Ensemble presents jazz classics such as “Take the A Train” and “Birdland” in addition to J.J. Johnson’s “Lament.”  Rounding out the program is Gordon Goodwin’s “Count Bubba” and Johnny Richards’ Afro-Cuban groove “La Suerte de los Tontos.”

The concert is free, but tickets are required. Pick up tickets between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the PJC Lyceum ticket office in Building 8.
