Pensacola Junior College invites the community to the dedication of the Edward M. Chadbourne Library, Building 20, on the Pensacola campus.
The celebration is 3 p.m. Aug. 24.
The library is named for prominent Pensacola businessman and PJC alum Edward Chadbourne and his family. The Chadbournes have contributed significantly to the college through generous support for student scholarships.
PJC selected Sam Marshall Architects to renovate the 30-year-old, 50,000 square-foot library. The project includes a 16,500 square-foot addition that expands the reach of library, providing offices for Distance Learning and Instructional Technology staff. A large seminar classroom and other student spaces are also a part of the addition. A large, open lobby ties the new and renovated areas together and includes a glass-railed open staircase, day-lit seating areas and a coffee shop.
In an effort to provide a technologically advanced, yet easy-to-use collaborative learning center, a modified version of the original Technology Enabled Active Learning classroom at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was designed into the project. The room includes media-rich video displays and interactive student displays. The intent of the classroom is to help students visualize and collaborate on subject matter with the use of a hands-on environment with desktop experiments, computer-based assignments and educational technology.
Schmidt Consulting Group Inc. provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, telecommunications, security and audio-visual services for the project.
