Take Exciting Adventure with Twain's "Big River"
7/8/2009

The Pensacola Junior College 2009 Summer High School Onstage Workshop presents Mark Twain’s “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”

Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 31-Aug. 1, Aug. 7-8; and

2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8 on the Pensacola campus.

This 1980s musical adaptation of Huckleberry Finn showcases riveting music and lyrics by Roger Miller. All of the fun and adventure of the original novel is enhanced by the choreography and songs. Many other playwrights have tossed out much of the issues of racism, freedom and morality. “Big River” doesn’t avoid these topics. William Hauptman’s skillful script delves into the book’s deeply mature themes.

The play won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical of the Year, Outstanding Original Score and Outstanding Book of a Musical, as well seven Drama Desk awards.

The PJC production’s creative team: technical director Bob Gandrup, costumer Edee Green, musical director Diane Queen, choreographer Michael Dennis, conductor Don Snowden, director Rodney Whatley and associate director Billy Buff.

Reserved tickets are $15.

For the two Saturday performances, PJC also offers $25 VIP tickets that include a catered reception in the Rehearsal Hall next to the stage prior to the show. VIP ticket holders receive priority, down-in-front, center seating; 50 seats are available for each Saturday performance.

“VIP ticket holders get to meet the cast and enjoy fine dining and beautiful music,” Whatley says. “This is a fancy, catered affair with entertainment provided by PJC music majors and actors from the play. Seth Friedman and Sarah Peake, two of our most gifted high school performers, entertain guests with three beautifully rendered songs, and a PJC jazz ensemble also performs.”

Purchase tickets at the Lyceum box office in the Ashmore, 1000 College Blvd. VISA MasterCard, American Express, cash or check are accepted.
